in which k makes something out of nothing24 July, 2010

Do you have those things in the backs of your cabinets that you’re never going to eat, leftover from weird recipes you never made or food kicks that you got over before you ran through your stock? But you don’t throw them out because they’re edible, and you don’t give them away because someday you might want them again?

We are moving in one week.  We are attempting to clean out the kitchen before we do, which means making meals out of all our odds and ends without buying more of the things we’ve already run out of to make them work.

And it turns out K is a genius when it comes to making something out of nothing. My favorites so far have been the bread she made which used up the oat bran and matzo meal and the ice cream which consisted entirely of evaporated milk, hershey’s syrup and half a jar of maraschino cherries with juice.  They were delicious, believe it or not.

This weekend, we will eat eggs, popcorn, hummus, and brown rice in who knows what concoctions.  and we will pack our kitchen into boxes.  I can’t wait.

  • Your description of the bread makes me laugh. My favorite bread in my memory was one Mom made using up leftovers from my brother’s eighth birthday party. The theme had been “make your own sundaes” so is had caramel and marshmallow sauces in the bread as well as left over hot cereal or pancake batter that often forms the base of bread. It was amazing.
