the plan part one: what now4 August, 2010

on the road

Last weekend, we drove 2,000 miles across the country from Seattle, WA to Rockford, IL in 32.5 hours (beating our old record by 30 minutes) only stopping at rest stops and gas stations, taking turns sleeping and driving.

Now that we’re here, we’re starting to house shop in rural Iowa.  When we find a place, here’s what we want to do:

be with each other all the time
be outside (almost) all the time
have a garden big enough to feed us
cook lots of amazing food
keep bees, and chickens, and maybe dairy goats
draw and paint and make beautiful things
live with less stuff and with less environmental impact
restore some tall grass prairie
live with integrity in every aspect of our lives and support others who strive to do the same
do what makes us happy, even if it is unconventional

Stay tuned for The Plan Part Two: Why Iowa and Part Three: What About Jobs

  • Anne – Loving the blog! Is this a blog? Today Kris and I went to Everett or Edmunds (never know which of those is which) to find out about renewing our National Boards – mostly we gossiped and passed notes about the lady next to us who had an oral fixation and kept eating, drinking, and chewing. What an adventure for you (read minor envy). I’ll keep looking – perhaps a little vicarious living going on here – Kit

  • AWESOME. Seriously, Kate and Anne, you rock. I hope you manage that all (I know you will) and I can’t wait to take a road trip to visit you. Also, didn’t know you had a blog and an Etsy shop!

  • Hi Anne and Kate -
I can’t wait to hear more about your adventure. Make sure to send pics of the new place (goats and chickens too!) so the entire IT can keep up on what is going on. I love your goal to “live with integrity in every aspect of our lives and support others……” – it made me smile. I have no doubt that you have done so already. Take good care and keep smiling at each other – Kris

  • Kate and Anne,
I’m fascinated (and envious) with your plans. Somehow I feel I know what you mean ‘live with integrity’, and yet I want to hear from you what you mean. And now that you’re here…
