When we dig up sod for garden beds or dig holes for plants we find things in the dirt. Lots of things. And we wonder… What were they for? How old are they? Why in the world are they buried in the backyard?

  • Way cool! That’s actually a fair number of finds for farmland in the Midwest. Do you know much about the early history of your land? You might want to contact your State Archaeologist (http://www.uiowa.edu/~osa/) to see if they have any information about your finds. They might also want to know that you have a bit of a “site”.

  • Cool! I didn’t know we had a State Archaeologist. We know the house was built in 1895 but not much else.

  • Kate, I was going to send you this link – but then I realized that you’re a dork and had already commented :) I love it.

  • Love the picture. And for the record its a small sampling of all the stuff we find. I seriously love random chunks of metal.

  • We are convinced our property used to be the dump. We uncover loads of stuff, but nothing of value!
