step 1 pasta box to envelope

Step 1. Cut the box along the edges of the front panel to remove the front panel.

step 2 pasta box to envelope

Step 2. Cut off the 4 small flaps.

step 3 pasta box to envelope

Step 3. Flip the box over and fold the 2 remaining flaps in toward the center. Put glue on the lower thirds of the flaps.

step 4 pasta box to envelope

Step 4. Fold the panel closest to you up toward the center and glue it into place.

step 5 pasta box to envelope

Step 5. Decorate your envelope.

We use these rigid envelopes to mail cards that people order from our shop. If they order something bigger, we make a bigger envelope out of a cracker or cereal box. This way, we get to reuse materials instead of increasing the demand for new cardboard by buying ready-made envelopes.

  • I read this post yesterday. Last night, I had a strange dream where I was in a big group and we had an envelope emergency. I came to the rescue by pulling pasta boxes out of the recycling bin and making enough envelopes for everyone. For real. Thanks for helping me save the day.

  • Sara, your dreams are much more logical and artistic than mine. Maybe it’ll come true!

  • I got my package today…even before seeing this post I marveled over the envelope my notecards and postcards came in. It’s pretty darn cool on so many levels. :)

  • Do you need more boxes? Do you just use pasta boxes, or will cereal boxes work too, or grain boxes like what quinoa come in? I can save ours for you and send them home with your neighbor!

  • Holly – You are awesome. Currently, we force my sister (Sara, above) and my mom, and K’s dad all to save boxes for us, even though they all live over 6 hours away and accumulate closets-full before they ever get the chance to deliver them to us. We would love your pasta and cereal boxes. We make hardly any of our own.
