Trends are things that come, often out of nowhere, and then everyone is doing/wearing/saying/eating them. Usually, they go away again similarly. I think that all of us are aware of certain trends going on. What those trends may be vary depending on where you live and what industry you work in and what kinds of things interest you. I tend to notice what’s suddenly popular in web/graphic design, and… well, that list used to include new condo architecture, urban hipster fashion, and snack food shops. But, uh, those are a little coast city specific it turns out.
So I may not be seeing as many regional trends, but there are still the internet ones. In Etsy design (and increasingly general website design) we’re seeing lots of handwritten typefaces (especially thin white writing overlaying photographs), triangles/chevrons/pennants, scalloped or stitched edging, and muted colors with neon accents. And out in the real world I’ve been listening to a lot of radio pop music (as the flashing light that makes my car look like a mail vehicle uses the cigarette lighter and I therefore can’t plug in my 7 year old ipod whose battery is shot) and I’ve noticed how many of the songs have the same rhythm.
How about you? Do you notice trends in footwear, educational philosophy, graffiti, market vegetables? Do you know all the new slang words or what shape all the new cars are? What’s your niche?

K- What an interesting topic, especially for those of us that are not living in “trendy” areas (to say the least). I would say what we are trying to do – grow our own food, live sustainably, etc. – is the trendy thing. Seems like the popular thing to do is have a backyard garden and a few chickens. However, I had another farmer chastise me about it the other day, saying that he was part of the movement in the ’70s, and that all of a sudden people are just catching on to the local food movement.
Also, I’m impressed you can listen to pop radio. All we have around here is country, oldies and fuzzy NPR.

Most of the trends I am in the loop with relate to pop culture and come from working with college students. From the most popular bands (fun. is currently big) to the most popular dance moves (the bernie hit big this year) to catch phrases (yolo – you only live once), I always fall behind the learning curve here yet usually above the rest of society. It will be interesting to lose this connection and my link to the hip and trendy.

I just found this awesome post about food photography trends, something I notice tangentially but don’t have the background to speak so intelligently about, let alone replicate. Check it out here: http://www.dessertsforbreakfast.com/2012/06/current-food-photography-styles-and.html

I checked it out, but only because it was called dessertsforbreakfast. It really wasn’t about that…

So many trends…that 80s fashion, which was bad the first time around, is back. I can’t help but cringe at the people that combine the fashion AND the colors of the 80s. Eesh. Sorry…also bangs seem to be back, Tom’s shoes are in here. Your notice of typeface and chevrons…I have noticed the typeface, but owls are what I see more. And modern geometrics.

Nicola – We had to look up what Tom’s shoes were. We certainly don’t see those here.

I agree with all of this. Also, the resurgence of American Indian / indigenous American designs. Toms. Craft-distilled spirits. Owls, yes.
